The Long Beach Journalism Initiative is launching  a locally based media literacy training program for both students and teachers that can be easily accessed and used by Long Beach schools. The program includes:

  • A summer 2024 daylong “bootcamp” for local teachers (both primary and secondary) that includes ideas for classroom instruction, curriculum, assignments and exercises to use in the classroom.
  • A resource list of local journalists who are available to visit classrooms and give presentations and lessons, broken down by subject matter.
  • A fall 2024 student fellowship cohort that would be split between Padnet.tv — the city’s public broadcasting station — and the Long Beach Post/Business Journal, to give students first-hand experience in reporting, video production and broadcasting.

The program also includes a communication strategy, an event plan, downloadable materials and use of our facilities, equipment and staff.

We believe this innovative initiative will become a model and catalyst for partnerships between districts, schools, teachers and media outlets across the state.
